Walk into any hardware shop in Chennai and ask "which cement is best?" — you'll get a different answer from each shopkeeper, because each one stocks different brands and pushes whatever has the best dealer margin that month. This post compares UltraTech, Ramco, Dalmia, and Birla — the four biggest cement brands you'll see in Tamil Nadu — on the parameters that actually matter, with no brand bias.

🧮 Plan your cement order with the Cement Calculator — plastering, columns, RCC slabs — then order through the Suppliable app for live brand pricing.

TL;DR — pick by job, not by brand loyalty

Job Recommended brand (Chennai 2026) Why
Plastering (internal + external) Dalmia DSP / Ramco Supergrade Fine particle size, smooth finish
RCC slabs, columns, beams UltraTech PPC / Ramco Supergrade Consistent strength, predictable setting
Foundation, sub-base India Cements / Birla Samrat Cheaper, strength-adequate for non-load-critical work
High-strength concrete (M30+) UltraTech OPC 53 / Ramco OPC 53 Highest BIS-certified strength
Bulk pours (commercial, multi-storey) UltraTech PPC Pan-India supply consistency, dispatch reliability
Block masonry adhesive applications Ramco Hardworker Block Fix Made for AAC, not actually a "cement" but worth noting

The four brands at a glance

UltraTech (Aditya Birla Group)

  • India's largest cement maker (~120 MTPA capacity)
  • Plants near Chennai: Reddipalayam (TN), Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka
  • Common SKUs in Chennai: UltraTech PPC, OPC 43, OPC 53
  • Strength: PPC consistently tests at 38-42 MPa (28-day), well above BIS minimum
  • Reputation: Premium "safe choice". Highest brand recall.
  • Chennai price (50 kg PPC bag, June 2026): ₹410-420

Ramco Cements

  • South India's largest player, headquartered in Chennai
  • Plants near Chennai: Alathiyur (TN), Jayanthipuram (AP)
  • Common SKUs: Ramco Supergrade PPC, Ramco PPC, Ramco Hardworker
  • Strength: 36-40 MPa typical
  • Reputation: Most reliable supply in TN — rarely stocks out. Slight cost edge.
  • Chennai price: ₹400-410

Dalmia Cement

  • Strong play in eastern + southern India
  • Plants near Chennai: Ariyalur (TN), AP, Karnataka, KAR
  • Common SKUs: Dalmia DSP, Dalmia PPC, Dalmia Cement Master
  • Strength: 36-40 MPa
  • Reputation: Best for plastering — finer grind = smoother finish. Slightly less common for structural.
  • Chennai price: ₹395-405

Birla (UltraTech's parent brand for Birla Super, Birla Samrat)

Note: "Birla" as a cement name is the legacy MP Birla Group's range (Birla Samrat, Birla Cement, Birla Premium). These are separate from UltraTech, which is also Birla-owned via Aditya Birla. Confusing — but commercially distinct.

  • Common SKUs: Birla Samrat PPC (most common in Chennai), Birla Super
  • Strength: 35-38 MPa
  • Reputation: Cost-conscious choice. Strength adequate for residential.
  • Chennai price: ₹385-400

PPC vs OPC — which one to buy?

This is the more important decision than brand. Most Chennai construction work uses PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement):

Property PPC OPC 43 OPC 53
28-day strength 33-40 MPa 43+ MPa (BIS minimum) 53+ MPa (BIS minimum)
Heat of hydration Low (less cracking) Medium High (more cracking risk)
Workability Excellent Good Good
Setting time Slower (more time to work) Standard Standard
Use case Plastering, residential RCC, masonry Standard structural High-strength concrete (M30+)
Price Standard +₹10-20/bag +₹20-40/bag
Sulphate resistance Better Standard Standard
Durability in coastal Chennai Better Standard Standard

For 90% of Chennai residential construction (G+0 to G+2): PPC is the right choice. It's cheaper, more workable, less crack-prone, and lasts longer in coastal humidity. Reserve OPC 53 for specific high-strength members specified by your structural engineer.

Strength testing — what to actually believe

The label on the bag tells you the BIS grade (e.g., "Portland Pozzolana Cement, IS 1489 Part 1"). It does not tell you the strength you'll get in your slab. Real strength depends on:

  • Water-cement ratio (most important variable — 0.45-0.50 is ideal for M20)
  • Aggregate quality
  • Mixing time
  • Curing duration (7 days minimum, 28 days for full strength)
  • Site temperature during pour

In practice, all four brands above deliver more than adequate strength for residential construction when mixed and cured correctly. The brand matters less than the mix design and curing discipline.

If you're skeptical, send a cube test sample to a lab (₹500-1,000 per cube) — most Chennai concrete labs (Sigma, Geotech, IIT Madras testing wing) can certify a 28-day cube strength.

Where each brand wins — Chennai-specific

Coastal builds (ECR, east of OMR)

Best: PPC (any brand) + Pidiproof LW+ at the pour. PPC's superior sulphate and chloride resistance matters when the building sees salt-laden air daily. Avoid OPC unless your structural engineer demands it.

Bulk pours (slab day, ready-mix scenarios)

Best: UltraTech or Ramco. Supply reliability matters when you're pouring 30+ m³ of concrete in a 4-hour window. A 2-bag stockout mid-pour can cost ₹50,000 in idle labour + cold joint repairs. UltraTech and Ramco both have multiple TN warehouses; Dalmia and Birla supply is more uneven.

Plastering work

Best: Dalmia DSP or Ramco Supergrade. Finer grind means smoother finish, less rework. UltraTech is fine but feels marginally coarser to most masons.

Tight-budget builds

Best: India Cements (₹390-400) or Birla Samrat (₹385-400). Both meet BIS PPC standards. Save ₹20-30/bag × 200+ bags = ₹4,000-6,000 on a typical 1000 sqft house. Acceptable for non-structural members (compound walls, sub-base, plinth). Avoid for slabs/columns where consistent strength matters more.

Pre-cast or block manufacture

Best: Ramco Hardworker (specifically for AAC block thin-bed adhesive — not a general cement, but mentioned for completeness).

The cement price gap myth

Many people assume premium-brand cement (UltraTech, Ramco) is "much more expensive" than budget brands. The actual gap in Chennai:

  • UltraTech PPC: ₹415
  • Ramco PPC: ₹405
  • Dalmia PPC: ₹400
  • Birla Samrat: ₹395
  • India Cements PPC: ₹390

That's a ₹25/bag spread, or 6%. On a 280-bag house build, the difference between buying all UltraTech vs all India Cements is ₹7,000. Real, but not life-changing — and far less than the ₹2-4 lakh you risk by under-budgeting elsewhere.

For a typical Chennai build, the sensible play is Ramco or Dalmia for general use, UltraTech for the slab, India Cements for the compound wall. Mix-and-match is fine.

How to avoid fake or sub-spec cement

This is the bigger risk than brand choice. We have a separate post on how to spot fake cement, TMT and Asian Paints. Quick checks:

  • Verify the MRP printed on the bag matches what you're paying
  • Check the manufacturing date — cement loses strength after 3 months of storage
  • Look for the BIS hallmark + IS number (IS 1489 for PPC, IS 269 for OPC)
  • Buy from a billed dealer with GSTIN on the invoice — verify the GSTIN on the GST portal
  • Brand sites have batch verification tools — UltraTech and Ramco both let you SMS/scan the batch code to verify authenticity

Storage matters as much as brand

Even the best cement turns useless if stored badly. Rules:

  1. Off the ground — store on wooden planks or pallets, never directly on cement floor
  2. Away from walls — 18 inches of air gap on all sides
  3. Covered with tarp — Chennai humidity destroys exposed cement
  4. Stack max 10 bags high — bottom bags compact and lose workability
  5. First-in-first-out rotation — never use a 6-month-old bag if a fresh one is available
  6. Use within 60-90 days of manufacturing date
