If you're painting an Indian home, the choice between Asian Paints Tractor Emulsion and Asian Paints Royale is one of the biggest cost decisions you'll make. On a typical 2BHK, going all-Royale instead of all-Tractor adds roughly ₹9,000-15,000 to the paint bill and doesn't change the visible finish much if you're picking flat matt shades in a bedroom. But in a living room with kids and daily wiping, that extra spend pays back within 2 years.

This post breaks down where each one actually earns its price.

Quick answer

  • Tractor Emulsion: budget-friendly, matt finish, coverage ~140 sqft/L/coat, wipe-able but not scrubbable, 2-3 year finish life. Best for: bedrooms, ceilings, guest rooms, rented properties, utility areas, budget builds.
  • Royale (Luxury / Aspira): premium silk finish, coverage 110-140 sqft/L/coat, fully scrubbable, 5-7 year finish life, comes with explicit performance warranty on the top variants. Best for: living rooms, dining, kitchens, kids' rooms, master bedrooms in premium builds.

Most Chennai homes should mix both: Royale in high-use, visible rooms; Tractor everywhere else. Whole-house Royale is usually overkill; whole-house Tractor is under-specced for a premium home.

Product family — the full Asian Paints interior range

Asian Paints doesn't just sell "Tractor" and "Royale" — each is a family:

Tractor family (budget tier)

  • Tractor Emulsion — basic matt water-based emulsion, ~₹240/L
  • Tractor Emulsion Shyne — slight sheen for wet-cloth wipeability, ~₹280/L
  • Tractor Uno — economy variant, thinner formulation, ~₹200/L

Royale family (premium tier)

  • Royale Luxury Emulsion — the standard "Royale" people talk about, silk finish, ~₹420/L
  • Royale Aspira — designer-grade with special-effect finishes, ~₹580/L
  • Royale Atmos — air-purifying (Volatile Organic Compound absorption), ~₹700+/L
  • Royale Health Shield — anti-bacterial (silver ion tech), ~₹520/L
  • Royale Play — decorative texture range (not comparable to standard Tractor/Royale flat paints), ₹400-1,200/L depending on effect

Between them sits Premium Emulsion (~₹340/L) as the middle tier — good if you want washability without the Royale premium.

The three questions that decide it for a given wall

1. Will this wall get touched a lot?

If yes — Royale. Kids' rooms, entryways, corridors, TV walls where the sofa back rubs against paint. Tractor scuffs from touch pretty quickly; Royale takes years to visibly wear.

If no — Tractor. Ceilings, above-headline zones in bedrooms, guest rooms nobody uses daily.

2. Will you need to clean marks off?

If yes — Royale. Crayon marks, chai spatters, curry stains, gecko poop on the ceiling — Royale's silk surface takes a wet-sponge scrub. Tractor smears when you try to clean it.

If no — Tractor.

3. How long until you next repaint?

If < 3 years — Tractor. Rented properties, transitional spaces, colour experiments. Not worth Royale's premium if you're changing the palette soon.

If 5+ years — Royale. Master bedrooms in your own home, formal living rooms. The Royale premium amortises over the longer life.

Worked cost example — 2BHK (1,000-1,200 sqft) in Chennai

Typical 2BHK has ~2,600 sqft of interior wall surface (both sides counted once). Two coats over primer:

Litres needed = (2,600 × 2) ÷ 140 = ~37 L
Round to 40 L in optimal pack combo

Option A — all Tractor Emulsion

  • 2 × 20 L Tractor buckets = ₹9,600
  • Paint cost: ₹9,600

Option B — all Royale Luxury

  • 2 × 20 L Royale buckets = ₹16,800
  • Paint cost: ₹16,800

Option C — Mixed (the sensible one)

Assume ~1,000 sqft of wall in living room + dining + kids' room → Royale (needs ~15 L). Remaining ~1,600 sqft (2 bedrooms + kitchen back + utility + ceilings) → Tractor (needs ~25 L).

  • 1 × 20 L Royale = ₹8,400 (5 L leftover for touch-ups)
  • 1 × 20 L Tractor + 1 × 10 L Tractor = ₹7,300
  • Paint cost: ₹15,700

Option C costs almost the same as all-Royale, but the extra spend goes into the rooms where it matters, and you have Royale leftover for the inevitable marks in year 1.

Where each one over-delivers

Tractor over-delivers when...

  • You paint over a well-prepped surface (2 coats putty + primer)
  • The room stays low-touch (bedroom you sleep in but don't touch walls)
  • You keep humidity under control (working AC, dry Chennai winter months)
  • You accept "matt = flatter look" instead of Royale's slight sheen

Under these conditions, Tractor lasts 3-4 years and looks nearly identical to Royale from 6 ft away.

Royale over-delivers when...

  • Small kids in the house — crayon marks, food spills, sticker glue residue
  • High humidity zones (Chennai coastal builds, bathrooms adjacent walls)
  • You cook Indian food daily — turmeric splatter in the kitchen back wall
  • You wipe walls before annual pooja or festivals
  • The finish quality matters (photos, hosting, resale-ready homes)

Common misconceptions

"Royale is thicker so it covers in one coat"

No. Royale needs 2 coats over primer just like Tractor. Coverage per litre is similar (110-140 vs 140-160 sqft). Skipping the second coat looks fine for 6 months, then patches show.

"Royale is toxic / has strong smell"

Opposite. Royale is ultra-low-VOC — safer for young kids and pets than Tractor. Both have the mild acrylic emulsion smell for 6-12 hours after application, then odourless.

"Tractor is for rented homes only"

Not really — Tractor works perfectly in owned homes for the 60-70% of walls that don't get touched. Whole-house Tractor is only under-specced if you value scrub-cleanability of every wall.

"You need to strip Tractor before applying Royale"

No. Royale goes over cured Tractor with one primer coat between. Common upgrade path when you repaint a rental property before moving in.

Which sheens to pair

If you're mixing Tractor + Royale in one home, sheen consistency across rooms matters visually. Rules of thumb:

  • All-matt house — Tractor Emulsion + Royale Luxury (matt variant, ask dealer) or Premium Emulsion Matt
  • Slight sheen everywhere — Tractor Emulsion Shyne + Royale Luxury (silk)
  • Designer look in some rooms — Tractor in bedrooms + Royale Aspira in living for a Terra / Metallica finish

The exterior question

Neither Tractor nor Royale is for exterior use — both fail in 1-2 years outdoors. For Chennai exteriors, use Asian Paints Ace (standard), Apex (mid-tier), or Apex Ultima (premium, 5-6 years on coastal walls). See our Royale vs Apex vs Tractor comparison for the full context.

What Asian Paints itself recommends

If you ask an Asian Paints dealer's tinting-station salesperson:

  • Tractor — first-home buyers, tenanted rooms, budget-tier builds
  • Premium Emulsion — value-conscious owner-occupied homes
  • Royale Luxury — most owner-occupied homes with kids
  • Royale Aspira / Atmos — premium builds, hospitals, homes with air-quality concerns
  • Royale Health Shield — kids' bedrooms specifically

Frequently asked

Is Royale worth the price for a bedroom I sleep in but don't touch walls?

No. Tractor Emulsion is fine — 90% of the visible finish quality at 55% of the cost. Save the Royale for high-touch rooms.

Which one is better for humid Chennai bathrooms?

Neither is designed for bathroom interior use above the tile line. Use Asian Paints Damp Sheath (specifically for bathroom / wet areas), or Nerolac Beauty Damp Proof. Applying Tractor or Royale in bathrooms leads to peeling in 12-18 months.

Can I use Royale on a kitchen back wall?

Yes for the parts away from direct splash. For behind the stove and around the sink where oil spatter lands, use Royale Grease Shield or a tiled backsplash. Standard Royale Luxury will discolour from turmeric and cooking oil over 2-3 years.

Does Royale really have a 5-year warranty?

Yes — Royale Luxury and above come with a printed 5-year warranty against fading, peeling, and cracking (when applied over the specified surface prep — 2 coats putty + 1 coat primer). To claim, you need the original tax invoice — another reason a GST bill matters.

What about Birla Opus? Is it cheaper than Royale?

Birla Opus Premium (their equivalent to Royale) is ~10-15% cheaper than Royale Luxury with comparable performance. Worth considering if you're not brand-tied. But Asian Paints has 3× the tinting-shade library and better colour matching, which usually decides it.
