A 1000 sqft Chennai terrace needs about 90 litres of Dr. Fixit Newcoat for proper 2-coat waterproofing — that's roughly 5 × 20 L buckets at a material cost of about ₹29,000. Here's the working out, plus the Waterproofing Calculator that handles any terrace size instantly.

Why bother with terrace waterproofing?
Chennai's northeast monsoon (October-November) dumps 800-1200 mm of rain in 6 weeks. A bare RCC terrace will hairline-crack within 2-3 years of casting, and those cracks become leak channels for water that ends up dripping through your ceiling 18 months later.
The fix: an elastomeric acrylic coating that:
- Bridges hairline cracks
- Reflects UV (slows further cracking)
- Resists ponding water
Dr. Fixit Newcoat is the standard product. ₹320-360/L, 22 sqft/L per coat, 7-year typical service life.
The math for a 1000 sqft terrace
Official Newcoat coverage: 22 sqft per litre per coat. Apply 2 coats (this is non-negotiable — single coat fails within a year).
Litres = (Area × Coats) ÷ Coverage
= (1000 × 2) ÷ 22
= 2000 ÷ 22
= 90.9 L
Round up to 95 L to allow for parapet wall coverage (typically extra 100-150 sqft at ~3 ft up the parapets).
Pack size combo
Dr. Fixit Newcoat is sold in:
- 1 L tin
- 5 L can
- 20 L bucket
For 95 L total, the most cost-effective combination is:
| Pack | Quantity | Volume | Cost (Suppliable Jun 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 L bucket | 4 | 80 L | ₹4,800/bucket × 4 = ₹19,200 |
| 5 L can | 3 | 15 L | ₹1,650/can × 3 = ₹4,950 |
| Total | 95 L | ₹24,150 |
Or simpler — order 5 × 20 L = 100 L for ₹24,000. You'll have ~5 L left over for touch-ups in year 2-3.
Application — the 7-step procedure
Skipping any of these means the coating fails:
- Surface prep: Sweep terrace, remove loose material, pressure-wash if possible. Let dry 24 hours.
- Crack repair: Any cracks wider than 1 mm — fill with Dr. Fixit Crack-X Paste first. Sand smooth.
- Primer coat: Dilute first coat 30% with water. Apply with brush/roller across the whole terrace.
- Drying: 6-8 hours, then check the surface — no tackiness.
- First full coat: Undiluted Newcoat, brushed or rolled across the full area + 12 inches up parapet walls.
- Drying: 6-8 hours again.
- Second full coat: Applied perpendicular to the first coat (if first was N-S, do this one E-W). Critical for sealing pinholes.
Total job time: 2 working days with proper drying between coats.
Common mistakes that void warranty
- Single coat instead of two. Will leak by next monsoon.
- Parallel coat direction. Both coats applied N-S means pinholes line up and water finds them.
- Applying over damp surface. Coating doesn't bond. Wait 24+ hours after last rain.
- Skipping primer dilution on the first coat. Adhesion to bare concrete is much weaker.
- Forgetting the parapet wall. Water entry point #1.
When to also add LW+
Newcoat is the topcoat — the visible defence layer. The other half of proper terrace waterproofing is integral waterproofing inside the concrete itself, using Dr. Fixit Pidiproof LW+ added at the mixer when the slab was cast.
If you're building new, do both: LW+ in the slab pour + Newcoat 28 days later. If you're retrofitting an existing terrace that's already leaking, Newcoat alone might not be enough — the leak is coming from inside the concrete. In that case, you may need to cut and patch with Pidifin 2K topical coating before applying Newcoat.
